What Watch would Steve McQueen Wear?

Courtesy of Hanhart
Okay - I am convinced that Steve McQueen was perhaps one of the MOST under rated actors out there.  Now I know what you're thinking - the king of cool?  Wildly popular?  Defined a generation?  How could you say under rated?  Because we sometimes have a one-dimensional view of him - tough guy.

Bullit, the Getaway, the Magnificent Seven - truly amazing films.  But for those of you who haven't seen it - treat yourself and watch The Sand Pebbles, or Papillon.  The man could act, and there were layers to him.  Yes, the guy was a bad-ass!  And we all appreciate that - but did you know that unlike so many Hollywood stars of the day, he actually was NOT always out for himself?

He was "notorious" for literally demanding certain items in bulk from studios when he agreed to do a film.  While it is safe to say that the movie executives thought he was a grasping and eccentric star, the truth is more revealing of the man.  Unbeknownst to most, he was donating those "bulk" supplies of blue jeans and electric shavers to a reformatory school for boys.  Hidden depths!

So it seems only fitting that such a fellow would be a Hanhart devotee - and he was.  And I can't help but feel that somehow he might have been the inspiration for these new watches.

This new series utilizes the much talked about "New Stainless Steel" that Hanhart displayed at this year's BaselWorld fair - here is what they have to say about it -

Watch cases made from stainless steel that is 100 times more scratch-resistant To keep the sporty, technology-inspired look of the Pioneer Racemaster watches in perfect condition for as long as possible, Hanhart is manufacturing the cases from an innovative kind of stainless steel. Hanhart is the first watch brand in the world to use this steel, which offers an ideal combination of hardness, resistance to corrosion and nickel-free composition. A special finishing process gives this steel its distinctive surface structure, which is at least three times tougher than before, resulting in a more than 100-fold, and thus more than 10,000%, improvement in scratch resistance. The use of this finishing process is patented for the watch- and jewellery making industry under the brand name HDSPro®.

Aside from its exceptional scratch resistance, this processed steel is also distinguished by its outstanding resistance to corrosion, which is comparable with any of the highest quality stainless steels available. Since the steel is not coated during the finishing process, the authentic look and feel of the material is retained and, moreover, there is no risk of chipping any layers of coating that have been applied. Last but not least, this steel does not contain any nickel, so watch cases made from this material do not pose any known allergy risk.

  1. Love the super hard steel. The rep allowed me to try and scratch it with my pocket knife. Couldn't leave a mark! Amazing.
